ON THE FIRST PAGE OF OUR STORY
THE FUTURE SEEMED SO BRIGHT
He was so handsome, and kind-hearted, and a man in full.
Michael McAllister was Carla Saxton's dream man. From the moment she met him in that bar she went to one night alone while she was feeling down, she knew he was the one. While she was only 18 (with a fake I.D., of course) and he was 25, that didn't stop her from letting him take her to his house.
It seemed like seconds, but within weeks, she had introduced him to her parents, who were leary but not disapproving (they had wanted their rebellious daughter out of the house since the death of her brother). After that, they were engaged, and soon married. Michael announced that they would be moving to the small town where he was from to be near his family who weren't able to attend the wedding, and Carla was overjoyed to meet his family, though she would miss St. Louis. Michael was such a good husband and soon-to-be father that she would never have doubted him.
When they got to their secluded house in a separated small town, however, the illusion began to fade.
It started when their daughter, Scarlett Rose, was only a few months old. Yet again, Carla asked Michael about meeting his family, unaware he had come home drunk, and he snapped at her and told her to shut up, bitch, and stop asking questions. While Carla was a bit taken aback, she told herself that she really was pestering him and he was drunk and would lighten and sober up eventually.
After Scarlett's first birthday, Carla asked if he wanted to invite their daughter's grandparents to the party, and he slapped her across the face and asked her why the fuck would anyone want to come to a damn toddler's party, and that he wouldn't pay to have one. Again, Carla told herself it was her fault, and that of course no one really needed to waste money on a first birthday party.
It continued like this for a few years. Carla stayed at home, taking care of Scarlett and the house, while Micheal went off to work and usually came home drunk. It was fine, really, because who wouldn't want to have fun after a long day of work?
Carla lived a life of surpressing fear and Scarlett lived a life of knowing how her father treated her mother. Sometimes, she heard him yell at her, and her crying, and the sound of him hitting her. Afterwards, though, he would apologize and tell her he loves her and that he couldn't imagine life without her.
So Scarlett's idea of love began.

BUT THIS THING TURNED OUT SO EVIL
I DON'T KNOW WHY I'M STILL SURPRISED
When Scarlett turned eight, her father started to treat her different.
Instead of only telling her goodnight and pretending like the fights never happened in front of her, he started to tuck her in and give her a kiss and tell her everything was alright. Because Michael and Carla no longer took their fights to the room. Nowhere in the house was safe from Michael's rage and Carla's tearful tolerance. While Scarlett knew something was wrong, she was happy to have her father love her.
Love is a funny thing. At least, anyone else who knew Scarlett's take on it would think so.
A few months before her ninth birthday, Michael began to touch his daughter.
Scarlett thought nothing of it; though it felt funny, she had seen Daddy touch Mommy that way all the time. So she figured it was normal and never told anyone like Daddy said to do.
For her ninth birthday, Michael finally allowed Scarlett to invite a few school friends over for a sleepover. Carla, unaware of what was going on between Michael and Scarlett, was happy to finally be able to celebrate a birthday right.
Unfortunately, Carla was sick and was unable to get out of bed that morning. It was probably something in her food the day before. But she was fast asleep from the time the other girls started arriving to the next morning. If she had been awake, she would have noticed the shift in their behavior. While they were happy and excited at the beginning, they were very quiet and standoffish in the morning, even Scarlett, though it was more out of jealousy than anything. Why did her Daddy love her friends when he only just met them? It wasn't fair, so when Mommy got better, she finally told her everything.
Carla should have taken a stand for once in her life. She should have taken Scarlett out of there and went right to the police.
Instead, she held onto the belief she had for the past ten years, that Michael was a good man, through all his faults. So she told Scarlett that Daddy loved her more than those other girls, of course he did. Scarlett was happy and the subject was put to rest.
For about a month.
It seemed the other girls weren't as intimidated by Michael's warning to stay quiet.
As the others in the town had actually been outside their property, unlike Carla, they knew that the police system was useless and loved the fact that basically nothing in the town happened. So they had to take the matter into their own hands.
What they didn't know was that Carla had nothing to do with it, so when the mob showed up at their secluded house, they made it clear that she was being targeted as well.
Michael had answered the door, and immediately the parents started to attack him with the bats and blocks of wood they brought. Scarlett came to see what was the matter and started screaming and tried to run towards her father to protect him, but Carla caught her in time and dragged her out of the house. Unable to get to the car, they ran on a trail in the woods out back, stopping when it started to get dark. With the last rays of sunlight, Carla and Scarlett could see the smoke billowing up from where they came from, and Carla felt two very different feelings: despair for what she lost and freedom from what she had yesterday.
Eventually they made it to a train station and used the only money Carla had to buy tickets back to St. Louis.

EVEN ANGELS HAVE THEIR WICKED SCHEMES
AND YOU TAKE THAT TO NEW EXTREMES
Carla moved back in with her parents, who were happy to hear from her since they hadn't in the past few years. Scarlett was enrolled in a public elementary school and was first introduced to the other humanoids. While she knew of their existence, the town she was in wasn't very tolerant, so she didn't know any personally. But as she grew to know them, she grew to love them. She had next to no human friends, and the majority of them were vampires and fallen angels- what could be called a 'bad crowd'. But though they did bully her a little bit because she was human, they stuck by her and stood up for her when needed.
And eventually, she fell in love with a fallen angel.
Scarlett's dark fantasy of love was played out perfectly by him. They got into fights and he hit her sometimes, but Scarlett didn't mind. The therapist she saw was unhelpful in helping her recovering in a healthy way, so she became a masochist. While she wouldn't inflict pain on herself, she didn't mind it when people inflicted it on her, especially not her boyfriend.
They broke up eventually, as most relationships of middle school did, and Scarlett was sad for a bit but recovered, still known as the school punching bag, though she did fight back sometimes. That was her modification of her mother.
Speaking of Carla, she was not recovering at all. While her daughter became her own sarcastic and spunky and masochistic woman, she remained weak and submissive, so she didn't put up a fight when Scarlett asked if she could have her permission to be a blood donor after she turned 16 and began attending Horowitz. It was for her boyfriend at the time, a vampire. Yeah, Scarlett realized in that time that vampires were a much better fit for her. Even her name was the color of blood. Carla knew it was dangerous, but Scarlett reminded her of Michael in looks, so she signed the permission slip and Scarlett began giving blood to hungry vampires.
She learned very quickly that sometimes vampires didn't want to stop. Once, she went to the hospital, needing a blood transfusion. But she didn't mind. She never minded. In fact, she loved the danger of it. It was a rush that she was addicted to.
So when she didn't have a vampire boyfriend to have her, she let her male vampire friends have a sip. While nothing else happened in these situations, people still talked and Scarlett became a whore in the eyes of many others at her school.
But she didn't care. Count all the fucks she gave. Scarlett McAllister didn't care about much of anything, anymore.

BUT YOU'LL ALWAYS BE MY HERO
EVEN THOUGH YOU'VE LOST YOUR MIND
PERSONALITY TRAITS
sarcastic/blunt -- While this seems like a contradiction, Scarlett has the viewpoint that everyone can tell when someone's being sarcastic, so when she's telling someone, "Oh, your hair looks perfect," she thinks that they'll know that she doesn't like it. So in a sense, she's brutally honest, just in a sarcastic sense. A good sign of her being sarcastic is her rolling her eyes or getting that sort of tone of voice, or if writing/typing, she uses italics.
"two faced" -- Scarlett doesn't mean to do this, but she tends to act a bit differently in front of different groups of people. She tends to act a little crazy while with friends and in public places, though she tones down a little when with her boyfriend. With her family, however, she's very quiet and doesn't attempt to make an impression at all. She doesn't know her grandparents, really, and her mother is still stricken.
indifferent -- She really doesn't give a damn what other people think. You could say unbelievably vile right to her face, and she won't even blink. This is mainly because she heard so many vile things said to her mother by her father that she's really not shocked by much of anything a teenager can say. Though, if someone says something about someone she cares about, she'll probably throw a punch.

TEN RANDOM FACTS
